“I’m creeping down the sovereign’s dimly illuminated corridor when I detect the clink of armor. A sentry, positioned mere paces away, is oblivious to the intruder inching nearer through the gloom. The atmosphere is frigid, stale with the faint scent of dust and metal, and the sole sounds are the soft creak of my belt’s leather straps and the hushed whispers of my footfalls.
I duck into an alcove’s shadow just in time, feeling my heart pound against my ribcage. Another breath—hold it—and then the guard moves on, his boot echoes gradually fading into distant passages. With a slow exhale, I emerge and press forward, my gaze fixed on the ornate entryway at the hall’s end. Beyond lies the sovereign’s vault, with prizes that even I hesitate to envision. Rumours abound, not just of gold and gems, but of artifacts steeped in sorcery, protected by snares and ancient wards. My palms tingle with anticipation and a sliver of trepidation.”
